Who’s leading mobile app efforts? Not IT

In terms of paying for mobile application projects, demonstrating increased independence, individual business units (and not IT) have been taking the lead. This fact was revealed in a report, which also states that in the advancement towards BYOD (bring your own device) also continues.

In the report published by mobile application management vendor AppCentral, 36 per cent of respondents to a survey said business unit budgets, rather than IT, were the main funder of mobile projects. Another 31 per cent said funding comes from marketing and executive leadership budgets. AppCentral surveyed more than 200 people across 100 companies that use smartphones or tablets.

In another key finding where BYOD dominates, 64 per cent of respondents admitted to using personal devices for work. Businesses, which represent another form of BYOD, are also enabling mobility to extended their workforce. 40 per cent said non-employees, such as business partners, have been provided the access to custom mobile applications.

Additionally, the survey found that companies are investing in custom mobile applications to change how they do business. 68 per cent of respondents said their organisation had made one or more custom mobile applications available to them. A popular mobile application category at the surveyed companies field sales productivity, an applications that helps drive revenue.

AppCentral found that 19 per cent of the organisations already have in-production app stores. This article by Paul Krill also list down other findings in AppCentral’s report.
