Mozilla Announces Firefox OS Developer Phones

This is the year Firefox OS launches, and Mozilla has kicked it off with the next stage for their OS.

Mozilla has tied up with Geeksphone who are offering their very own Firefox OS-based phone in partnership with Telefonica.

It’s important to note tat this is not a consumer device, Firefox OS hasn’t “launched” yet; rather this is a developer device intended for those who want to preview the OS on an actual device before they go ahead and release it for the public. Developers can use these devices to test their applications on an actual device rather than a simulator.

There are two phones that will be available, code named Keon, and Peak that have different specifications. Peak is the more powerful one, but neither of them are up the mark with current generation phones; although they are probably representative of the kind of devices Firefox OS is made for.

The specifications of Keon are as follows:

  • CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1Ghz.
  • UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA).
  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE).
  • Screen 3.5” HVGA Multitouch.
  • Camera 3 MP.
  • 4 GB (ROM) and 512 (RAM).
  • MicroSD, Wifi N, Light & Prox. Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB.
  • Battery 1580 mAh.

The Peak variant has similar specification, but with the following differences:

  • A faster dual core CPU: CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.2Ghz x2.
  • A larger screen: Screen 4.3” qHD IPS Multitouch.
  • A better camera: Camera 8 MP (back) + 2 MP (front) with Flash.
  • A better battery: 1800mAh.

Both these phones are obviously unlocked (and come without a SIM).

If you are not interested in getting a developer phone, you can use the Firefox OS simulator or you can even try and run Firefox OS on your own mobile device.
