Indian app Magzter is now the top grossing app in the Apple App Store

Magzter, an online magazine store created by two Indian developers Girish Ramdas and Vijayakumar Radhakrishnan, has made it to the top spot in Apple’s App Store for iPad. Magzter is a global mobile magazine store through which one can browse, buy, and read magazines on their iPads and iPhones.

Magzter took over the top spot of best grossing app last Thursday, making its way up through international favourites and long standing grossers like Angry Birds, NY Times for iPad, Clash of Clans, Quick Office Pro HD, Paradise Cove, FIFA 13, Need for Speed and Temple Run.

Magzter achieved this feat by engaging a total of 4.5 million users till date. In addition to the best grossers’ list, Magzter has consistently performed better than other reading apps like Flipboard, Pulse and Zite in terms of daily downloads.

Magster claims to have 5000 magazine issues including a bunch of free ones and also add new titles from around the world every week. About 400 of them are Indian magazines. The app has an interesting feature wherein users can set the country and be shown the latest and best magazines from their country of choice first. Also, Magazine Subscriptions are available for purchase inside this app.

The app was launched 17 months ago, but received massive traction over the past 45 days thanks to some Facebook sharing features that were added to the app. “Now, if you like the cover of a magazine, you can share it on Facebook, and if your friends like it, they can click to come to our store to buy it. This has had a major viral effect,” Girish Ramdas said.

The app is said to be the first Indian app to feature in the top grossers list across various App Stores. In addition to Apple’s App store, Magzter is also available on Andorid’s Google Play, and it was recently launched in Windows 8 App Store as well. One of the biggest advantages of Magzter over other similar apps, is that you can buy a magazine on one platform, say Apple’s iOS, and read it on another one of your devices that runs on the Android or Windows 8 platform.
