Voice over IP also known VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a transmission techniques involved in the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.
Joel Evans, in one his blog writes that the future of mobile calls is VoIP and video. His prediction comes out of the experience which he had gained while traveling areas of the country with spotty coverage. During those time he had been experimenting with video calling over Wi-Fi and even using Skype on his iPhone on AT&T’s 3G network as an alternative to traditional voice calls.
In his blog he list down two occasions where he used Skype as a power-user while mobile. In the first occasion he not only was able to hold his call, without drop off, across two states, but was also able to video conference, via Skype, iPhone-to-iPhone.
In the second occasion while vacationing, he had spotty coverage in the condo, so to make calls from his mobile, he launched Skype and then initiated the Skype-out calls directly from his iPhone, while tethered to the condo’s Wi-Fi. The Caller ID on his Skype account shows up as if he is dialing from his mobile. As a result anyone receiving calls from his side had no idea that he was calling via Skype and not from AT&T’s voice line.
People could argue that carriers have already embraced video calls over their network, since you can do Skype, Google+ Hangouts and others. However, these are all running on the traditional, un-throttled data network. You could see a future, starting with FaceTime, where the carrier prioritizes FaceTime calls and ensures better call quality, for a premium, of course.
