While app developers are quick to learn new programming, frameworks, SDKs and even languages, this is an important part of application design that is still not common knowledge. It’s easy to call this behaviour a clear breach of privacy, but all cases will not be as clear.
While can hope for application developers to take heed of these principles, it is unlikely for the world to ever be an ideal place, so it is important to note the role parents should play in this. Scott Hanselman proposes that maintaining one’s privacy and security while using the digital devices of today should be part of the essential training that any child receives from their parent. As he notes, “You’ve had the Drugs Talk, the Sex Talk, now have the Location Services Talk.”
For some parents, this could mean some effort to understand technology they don’t use themselves, but it is like any other aspect of involvement in a child’s education, and it seems this one should come sooner rather than later.
