Nokia and New India Assurance to provide a handset insurance plan

Nokia and New India Assurance have announced a new partnership in which they will be providing a handset insurance plan that will cover risks like thefts, burglary and other damage that is not covered under normal warranty like chemical and liquid damage. The insurance premium will be Rs. 50 or 1.25 per cent of the cost of the mobile phone – whichever is higher. On payment of this insurance premium and providing other details including official documents, users will be able to avail insurance cover for their mobile phone.

This offer will however be available only with mobile phones that are purchased from a Nokia branded retail store in Delhi NCR, Jaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Cochin. More cities are likely to be added soon to this list.

Mr. Kannan Gopalakrishnan, Director Retail, Nokia India said, “As India moves from being a volume to a value market, consumers are willing to pay more for their mobile phones. The NIA insurance plan is aimed at safeguarding Nokia consumers against the angst caused by loss, theft or damage of their devices, while offering them an affordable and effective solution to protect their investments. We believe with the changing consumer landscape and the growing penetration of smartphones in India, this plan is sure to see strong uptake amongst our consumers.”

To facilitate better experience for the customers, both the organizations have tied up with IRDA to act as an insurance broker. This will enable them to provide additional services at an extra service charge of Rs. 50 that will be levied when a claim is filed. Nokia assures settlement of these claims within a maximum period of 5 days, which includes facilities like call center, free pickup and drop of the device, cashless claims and even the availability of standby devices until the claim is settled.

This plan is available for all Nokia devices purchased starting March 14, 2013.
