Microsoft India kicks off Windows AppFest

Microsoft announced today that over 3,500 app developers have registered to attend an 18 hours hackathon in an attempt to a world record for the world’s largest app development marathon. Windows 8 is scheduled for a October 26, 2012, release and Microsoft has hosted what it calls the largest developer event, Windows AppFest, attracting developers and engineers from across the globe. The Windows AppFest has received a tremendous response with more than 3,500 developers registered to attend the 18 hour coding marathon at KTPO, Bengaluru. To mark the occasion, Guinness World Records officials are in attendance to sanction an attempt for the World’s Largest App Development Marathon.

According to an official release from Microsoft India:

“Thousands of budding developers, technology enthusiasts and students all with a vision to create apps with impact, gathered this morning at KTPO. Speaking from the Windows Appfest, Jon DeVaan, Corporate Vice President, Windows Development, Microsoft said, “Developers are at the center of Microsoft’s success. And India is home to some of the world’s most talented developers. We are focused on enabling developers to succeed as they build the next generation of apps. I can’t wait to see some of these apps being built at the Windows Appfest.”

Addressing the dignitaries, media and developers and laying emphasis on the developer ecosystem in India, Bhaskar Pramanik, Chairman, Microsoft India said, “Windows 8 is ‘Good for India’. In India, Microsoft is making significant investments and working with 1.2 million developers, over 1000 Independent Software Vendors and more than 2000 System Integrators to empower them with the tools, technologies and training required to develop high end skills and compete in a global marketplace.”

He went on to say, “The Windows AppFest will encourage budding developers, technology enthusiasts and entrepreneurs to innovate on next generation Windows technology, crucial for the development of the Local Software Ecosystem and the long-term economic growth of India’s IT industry.”

Jon DeVaan added, “Windows offers app developers state of the art design and development tools, the freedom and flexibility to use a choice of programming languages including HTML/JSS, global reach to 1.3 billion users, and industry leading revenue sharing. Simply put, Windows 8 offers the most significant developer opportunity ever.”
