Nokia’s and Intel’s MeeGo OS died an unfortunately early death without even being given a chance to compete in their own terms. Jolla is giving it a fresh breath of life, more details of which will come on November 21-22 during the Slush 2012 conference.
After Nokia abandoned the OS, Intel changed directions as well and thus Tizen was born. For those looking forward to a MeeGo-based phone however, Tizen will not fulfil that role. It is significantly different from MeeGo.
Jolla on the other hand is the result of a bunch of ex-Nokia developers who still believe that MeeGo is a great OS that deserved a chance. They have decided to build their own MeeGo-based OS and ship it on their own mobiles.
During Slush 2012—a two-day startup conference—Jolla will unveil the UI of their MeeGo-based OS. This OS, code-named “Sailfish” will be available for licensing by other manufacturers as well. During the conference they will also talk about he SDK for “Sailfish” and the application ecosystem. The core operating system of course is based on MeeGo, however they will be building on Mer, an unofficial community-supported continuation of MeeGo.
The world of mobile operating systems is very competitive right now, with lawsuits firing in all directions, and the ecosystem has changed a lot in just he past few years. Jolla has the same struggles to overcome as it releases its own OS.

I heard that Nokia gifted some of the MeeGO’s patents to Jolla. I hope them to include the touch haptics and unified message inbox.
