Qt continues to make strides towards better mobile support, this time with some new features that have to do with Qt Creator. Qt Creator is a free and open source IDE developed by Nokia, and designed for developing Qt applications. The latest beta release of Qt Creator 2.6 comes with some interesting changes that aim to make it easier for mobile developers using Qt.

One of the major changes is replacing the old concept of targets, with a new concept called “Kits”. In previous versions one could select a target such as Desktop, or MeeGo etc. and get preconfigured, hard-wired defaults. Often these weren’t what developers were looking for. The new Kits concept allows developers to define combinations of “device, compiler, debugger, and Qt version (and possibly other settings)”.   Another major new feature is support for creating Android applications. In fact support for both Android, and QNX—which is what BlackBerry OS 10 is based on—has been merged with this latest build. Unfortunately support for Symbian has been removed due to the lack of maintainers / contributors to that port. Considering Symbian is on its way out, this might not make much of a difference.
